Treating Arthritis In Senior Dogs
Thursday 23rd December 2021
When it comes to treating arthritis in senior dogs, giving anti-inflammatory drugs and pain-killers are often the first things that come to mind. But arthritis relief for dogs comes in many different forms, and there are lots of other things you can do to keep your pet happy and comfortable, and to help him make the best of every single day. These include simple life-style changes, innovative products and natural therapies/supplements. NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) still have a role to play, especially in severe cases, but it's good to know that they are not the only option you have. Early Diagnosis Makes A Difference The earlier your dog's arthritis is diagnosed, the better it is for him. This is because the right treatments can help slow down the progression of the disease, and increases the number of 'good years' he has to enjoy. The…
Build Your Pet's Immune System with Beta - 1,3 / 1,6 Glucan
Saturday 27th November 2021
A malfunctioning immune system in dogs can open the door to a host of diseases, such as infection, diabetes, osteoarthritis, and cancer. Keeping your dog’s immune system balanced can help reduce these risks, and contribute to overall health and well-being, according to veterinary experts. When this system is compromised, your dog may become increasingly vulnerable to illness. An immune system that’s off-kilter for an extended period can lead to chronic inflammation, which, in turn, can forge a path for disease. Diabetes, osteoarthritis, some liver and heart conditions, asthma, and cancer are just some of the diseases connected to inflammation, says Dr. Ken Tudor, a holistic veterinarian and founder of The Well Dog Place in Claremont, California. What Is Beta Glucan? β-glucans are a heterogeneous group of natural polysaccharides, consisting of D-glucose monomers linked by a β- glycosidic bond. They are important structural…

The Use of Ginseng in Dogs
Wednesday 15th April 2020
As pets age, their ability to absorb nutrients can decline, creating under-nourishment. This results in loss of energy and alertness, and an increased risk of illness. Not only is ginseng known as an appetite stimulant, but studies also show it can increase the ability of the intestine to absorb nutrients. Ginseng contains strong antioxidant components that help the body recover from stress, fatigue and illness. It also contains anti-inflammatory saponins that can also help regulate cholesterol and blood sugar levels. Another component in ginseng root is geranium, which has a powerful hydrogenating effect on the body, especially the liver. Recommended products for senior dogs... How to Care For Dogs Recovering From Surgery or an Injury
Monday 2nd March 2020
The time following surgery for your dog can be confusing and distressing for you both. Depending on what the surgery was, there will be different requirements in terms of wound care, recovery and rest time, and the medications or supportive therapies they may need post-surgery. This guide offers some practical general guidance, but make sure that you always follow any advice given by your vet post surgery. Immediate Post Surgery The first 24 hours after your dog returns home from surgery can often be the most challenging. Your dog will likely still be drowsy from the effects of the anesthetic and it can make them confused, uncoordinated, distressed and unsettled. Trying to make sure they are warm, comfortable, safe and secure is a priority. Make sure that you or another member of the family is around to supervise them, try to give…

What Did Your Dog Just Say? 15 Bark Sounds and What They Mean
Thursday 8th August 2019
Some dogs bark due to boredom, loneliness, or lack of exercise. Others bark incessantly to get attention or release stress. My dog barks to annoy me. Just kidding. The truth is, no dog barks just to drive us insane. Dogs bark for many different reasons and now, thanks to some pretty cool studies, we are starting to understand more about our dogs’ unique barks than ever before. For example, did you know that high energy dogs and highly intelligent dogs can be some of the worst culprits for barking, especially if their barks are not being understood? That’s because dogs with lots of energy can be prone to higher levels of anxiety, stress, and boredom if their exercise needs are not being consistently met. And intelligent dogs are no different. Brainy breeds need plenty of mental stimulation to stay happier and – ahem – quieter. With…
Does Your Dog Really Love You?
Sunday 4th August 2019
As a dog owner, you know love when you look into your pet’s eyes. You’ve probably experienced one of those doggie pick-me-up moments. You know, when you’re feeling down and your pup comes over with concerned, soulful eyes and places his head in your lap? Or the sheer joy of walking through the door to find a burst of pure enthusiasm there to greet you … ...But do dogs love their owners, really? Is this really “love” you feel emanating out from your dog or is it something reflected back from yourself? Research says it’s actually both. And it’s good for both of you. What Research Says About Dog Love The impact of a healthy dog-human relationship is an idea that science supports. A few years ago, a study found that “mutual gazing” into each other’s eyes increases oxytocin levels in both. This creates a sort of love-loop…
L-Carnitine Deficiency in Dogs
Thursday 23rd May 2019
L-carnitine is an important nutrient that acts as a transport for fatty acids, essential for the cellular production of energy. It helps the body utilize fat for energy while maintaining the lean muscle mass which helps reduce the overall body fat. Deficiency of this nutrient can cause a variety of health problems for animals; most significantly, the association with heart disease (cardiomyopathy) in dogs. The heart and skeletal muscles do not synthesize the nutrient on their own, requiring it to be transported there for use. Because of this, when the body is deficient in carnitine, the heart and skeletal muscles are negatively affected. While carnitine supplements are not always able to reverse the effects of this deficiency, they have proven to be the most successful course of treatment. The signs of this deficiency may include: Heart muscle failure Enlarged heart (dilated cardiomyopathy) Muscle pain Weakness Exercise intolerance Weakness…

Common Pet Supplements
Sunday 16th December 2018
Melody McKinnon on March 4th, 2017
Thanks to the vast amount of supplements available to pets today, it likely won’t be long until we see health food stores popping up specifically for animal needs. As far as the most common supplements go, there are a few that you’ll come across time and time again. These tend to be very helpful and versatile, in that most pets can benefit from them at some point in their life. Chondroitin: Typically, you will find chondroitin mixed with glucosamine rather than on its own. Both animals and people can benefit from these supplements as they work to decrease the pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is very common in animals as they age. Multivitamins: The idea is that pets get all the vitamins they need from their food, but sometimes that isn’t the case. A high quality organic multivitamin can do…

Do We Need to Supplement our Pet's Diet
Wednesday 13th September 2017
Well, whether your lovely pet on raw diet or on high quality food still, we need to fill in any nutritional gaps that they're missing. Regardless of the diet method you use which is supposed to give dogs everything they need, not all dogs are the same. For example, Sasha needs additional joint support. Zoe needs additional mental support. Zeus needs additional digestive support. Lucky who can thrive on the basics. And Bear our senior dog who needs to balance the nutritional requirements to avoid loss of energy and alertness, and an increased risk of illness How can one diet be okay for every dog? In the wild, wolves (and yes, we know dogs aren't wolves) search for what they need, and we think that need has been inherited by our modern canines. Thus, it is our responsibility as pet owners to balance…
11 things humans do that dogs hate
Wednesday 12th July 2017
There are many ways you can drive your dog nuts — and you may not even be aware you're doing them. Dogs try to be our best friends, but boy do we ever make it difficult sometimes. Here are some of the things we do that might make dogs question whether they want to remain best buds or cut ties completely: Using words more than body language We’re a vocal species. We love to chatter away, even at our pets, who can’t understand the vast majority of what we’re saying. Dogs might be able to deduce what a few key words mean — walk, treat, toy, off — and maybe even learn hundreds of words as some border collies have done. But they can’t understand human language. What they rely on to figure out what we mean is our body language. Dogs…
Are nutritional supplements necessary for my pet?
Thursday 1st June 2017
Nutritional supplements for humans are increasing in popularity and many formulas are specially designed to match specific needs such as products for children, men, women, throughout pregnancy, etc.. Similarly, your pet might need to take a nutrient supplement to compensate for incomplete diet (especially important in younger and older companions) or to address a particular health problem. Most of pet owners 80% in the case of dogs, do not know the nutritional requirements of their pets. They have the misconception that pets have the same nutritional requirement exactly as humans. Besides, a huge number of pet owners do not know the exact ingredients their pets are consuming. Vitamins, minerals, proteins or other trace elements are the most common nutrient deficient substances in an animal’s diet. A well balanced nutrition is most commonly indicated by a perfect animal growth, overall wellbeing and a…
